“darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. hatred paralyzes life; love releases it. hatred confuses life; love harmonizes it. hatred darkens life; love illuminates it …”
martin luther king, jr.today, as a nation, we celebrate the life and spirit of martin luther king jr. he was a man whose heart, words, actions and intentions were aligned with a deep love for humanity and whose voice has carried across time and space.
i feel him here with us today and everyday, during a time of unknowing and challenge, reminding us that we are more.
- we are more than our failures, though they may feel hard to forgive.
- we are more than the stuff we have, though it engages us with glitter.
- we are more than our mind wanting to be right and all the stories that it wants to affix onto humanity, for we are limitless.
- we are more than our fear of what lies beyond, for we are love and compassion.
we are human beings challenged by hope and anchored by faith – curious, ever evolving, transformative and divine!
for it is in our struggle that we find our faith … in the cold that we find warmth … in the troubles that we find value.
it’s no secret that our country is polarized – everyone feels that they’re on the ‘right’ side. and i get that. when we feel unseen and unheard that voice inside says, “wtf!” … i matter!
the difficulty here is that if we all believe we’re right, where do we unite?
in that space where there’s no right and wrong – in a space of forgiveness and compassion — hope. in the space where unity and peace are constant. in our heart of hearts. in the space where we matter.
which brings me to the challenge. what would life be if not for the challenge? flat. colorless. predictable and stagnant.
as human beings we’re not meant for stasis – we have many evolving stories – we’re here to move, grow, learn and transform. when we arrive without the ego – let go of the story – that’s when the lesson begins, and when we allow ourselves to experience all that failure offers, then we trust and then we can be released from the constriction of fear into the expansion of love … travel from the darkness into the light … take a chance and walk into the unknown.
this is what life is all about – taking a chance!
i challenge every human being, regardless of race, color, creed, gender, or who you love — i challenge you to let go of your fear of being wrong – to let go of the fear of not being enough – so that you can take a chance on us.
tag! you’re it!
i challenge you to see the ‘you’ in ‘me’!
